Duke Hoax: Day #204

Harris Johnson (left) - former state Democratic party official

The scene at the courthouse was of a divided room.

When the final vote totals were confirmed, there was an immediate cheer from the yellow-clad Nifong supporters clustered on one side.

Shanieka Rhinehart, an assistant district attorney, started a chant of "Let's go Nifong" and others supporters exchanged hugs and high-fives.

"This goes to show that justice can't be bought by a bunch of rich white boys from New York," said Harris Johnson, a former state Democratic party official and Durham resident for 56 years.

"Duke has a habit of sweeping things under the carpet. I guess this goes to show that no matter how much money you have, Durham is owned by its citizens," he added.

Across the aisle, the members of Recall Nifong-Vote Cheek sat quietly-some crying-and two Duke lacrosse players stood stoically in the back. Duke Chronicle

Hot Forum Topics:
Who's fault? Monk or Cheek?....I am a cousin of one of the three Duke players (who I don't want to name) and, as such, I've seen this whole thing develop from the inside....I'm wondering what is the reasoning behind the anti-Monk reaction?

I do not blame Cheek. But I blame Cheeks supporters for poor strategizing in their anti-Nifong drive. By introducing a third candidate (and it was Cheek, not Monk, who was the authentic third - for it is the substance of the candidate, not his final vote tally, that determines this status), the anti-Nifong group almost guaranteed a split in the vote and a victory for Nifong. -TalkLeft
