Duke Case: Day #203 V-Day

Mike Nifong Re-Elected As Durham County DA with 49% of vote

"There was one guy who came by with a lacrosse T-shirt. I didn't talk to him. I might have prejudged him." - Mike Nifong outside polling station this morning
Don't touch that man!
Nifong had a brief run-in at the polling place with Bob Harris, the play-by-play voice of the Blue Devils, when the prosecutor attempted to shake his hand. The radio announcer jumped into his car and was visibly upset when he noticed a television cameraman filming the exchange. He called county sheriff's deputies, who took no action after they arrived.
The reported exchange between Harris and Nifong:
You've got to be nicer than that," Nifong said.

"Get out of here," Harris said. "Don't pull this crap."

"This isn't about Duke," Nifong said. "This isn't about Duke at all."

"No," Harris said. "It's about honesty. You're not honest."

Nifong Re-Elected As Durham County DA - Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong has won his re-election bid after a highly divisive campaign thrust into the national spotlight by Nifong's handling of the Duke lacrosse rape investigation. With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Nifong led with 49 percent of the vote over Durham County Commissioner Lewis Cheek, who had 39 percent. Steve Monks, a Republican who mounted a write-in campaign for the position, trailed with 12 percent of the unofficial total...
"Over at Forest Hills, I went to shake the hand of a woman holding a Cheek sign, as I have in all the places I've gone," said Nifong to WRAL earlier in the day. "She did refuse to shake my hand. It turns out she's the mother of a Duke lacrosse player. She indicated that, and of course, people have the right not to do that too."

News & Observer:
Rain, Few High-Profile Races Lead To Low Turnout Tuesday Morning - There was robust turnout in Durham County, Bartlett said, where the race for district attorney was enlivened by debate over incumbent Mike Nifong's prosecution of three Duke University lacrosse players on rape and kidnapping charges. Nifong sought a four-year term against two challengers...

"The majority have been very friendly. There have been a few people who have not," a cheerful Nifong said later as he greeted voters in the parking lot of Temple Baptist Church. "There was one guy who came by with a lacrosse T-shirt. I didn't talk to him. I might have prejudged him - I'm not sure."

As he waved at a passing car, he noted with a grin: "That guy just looked at me and shook his head."

Nifong has insisted that the election should not be a referendum on the Duke case. But some voters made it clear that it was. John Straffin, an information technology analyst at Duke, voted for Steve Monks, a private attorney and fellow Republican who is running a write-in campaign.

"It was just looking at what each person had to offer and what each person was standing for, and not him," Straffin said, nodding at Nifong nearby.
