Duke Case: Following the Cash

Cash MichaelsWhat on earth has happened to that intrepid North Carolina pundit Cash "in the bag" Michaels?

Something very strange has happened to the "Bag Man" and we are still trying to figure out if some imposter has assumed his identity.

Cash Michaels has abandoned the sinking ship Nifong. In fact, he says he was never on it.

First, Cash Michaels wrote this article on Monday - DURHAM CHIEF BACKS DUKE PROBE. That article said in part:

An analysis by The Carolinian and Wilmington Journal newspapers show that what the police were telling the public, either through direct statements or public documents, at times did not match what they actually knew, or didn’t know, behind the scenes...

Indeed, if the district attorney has no better than what has been so far shown, a trial in this case may never be, and the African-American community will want to know why.
Then Monday evening, Cash Michaels reportedly posted a very interesting comment on the Duke case message board at CourtTV.com:
So that you don't go off believing this stuff about me "jumping ship," let me make you aware of the ship I was always on -

The Black community was told that a brutal crime was committed against someone in our community. The police and District Attorney left no doubt that a crime had been committed. In their public pronouncements and official applications to the court, they cited "evidence" (medical report, etc.) to back up their claims.

Now, today, exactly five months to the day of the alleged crime, the Black Press is asking, "WHERE IS THE EVIDENCE?"

Then Cash goes on Imhotep Gary Byrd's radio program on WLIB-AM in New York to talk about the Duke lacrosse case and he makes comments like this:
On welcome, Cash opened with, "I don't know what in the world to tell you."

He went on to say that when he began covering this case it seemed "clear", based on Nifong's statements, that "something terrible had happened to a young African American woman."

But, now, "five months have elapsed and we have still not seen a shred of evidence, though promised some time ago, not a shred of evidence backing up the prosecution's case."

And like this:
Cash: As recently as two weeks ago the Chief of Police is telling my investigator, "Oh, certainly" the PD is satisfied with its investigation and the strength of the case. Chalmers noted the City Manager's continuing full support, D.A. Nifong's continuing full support, and when they have their day in court the fruits of the investigation will be apparent. Well, Gary, based on what we now know, they don't have anything. This case may not get to trial...

and this:
Another key question, of course, is whether or not Nifong will even be elected and around in the Spring in light of all this nonsense. Now, I don't know if he's got some amazing piece of yet undisclosed evidence...a lacrosse team witness, a video tape, but anything he may have that hasn't yet been disclosed had better be blockbuster because there is nothing right now.

Holy Mother of Justice. It's hard to digest all this right now.

Big hat tip to NDLax84 over at Crystal Mess, who has been following the adventures of Mr. Michaels.

Cash Michaels apparently spends most of his online time at the abc11tv.com message boards: list of his message postings here

For a classic Cash rant:
Damn, the train is on the track, but the track runs off the cliff with you !
